Professional experience:
Dr. Rajeswari Shome is a Principal Scientist at the Project Directorate on Animal Disease  Monitoring and Surveillance  (PD_ADMAS), Bangalore. She has a strong interest, considerable track record in BRUCELLOSIS research and leading  four national research projects  at PD_ADMAS as principal investigator. Her brucellosis research interests include epidemiology and development of diagnostic tools. She has standardized and commercialised 2 ELISA diagnostics for diagnosis of bovine and small ruminant brucellosis.   She has visited various organised livestock herds,  provided diagnostic reports and suggested measures to control the disease. She has established a good laboratory where all diagnostic reagents, kits  and Brucella cultures are available under one roof. She has guided 03 PhD  and 5 M.V.Sc  students  and published more than  10 papers in the field of  brucellosis.  She has conducted three trainings of more than 1 week duration and  six training programs of one day duration in various states and travelled extensively to sensitize the zoonotic and economic importance of the disease.  Presently she is working on the development of  molecular diagnostics, improved sero- diagnostics  and molecular typing

Salient achievements:

  • Isolated and identified B. abortus from aborted cattle  of  Andaman and Nicobar Islands, from aborted Mithun of Nagaland and a total of 42  isolates from  Karnataka state. These isolates were confirmed by both genus and species specific PCR. As B. abortu- 22; B.melitensis- 13 and B. suis- 5 and  thirty four gene sequences are available in NCBI, Genbank.
  • Collected and screened for brucellosis cattle and buffaloes (14948); sheep and goat (13527), pig (3448) and 2320 human serum samples interpreted the  epidemiological data of the disease from  2006-2013,
  • Conducted three training programs of 8 days duration in brucellosis diagnosis, one  ICAR short course of 10 days duration and  one day sensitization trainings programs in 6 different states ( Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, M.P., U.P., Delhi  and  Chhattisgarh).
  • Providing need based diagnosis to  human patients (Veterinarians as well as to Medical doctors)., consultant services to the Farmers,  Govt and private farms  and ICAR and state University farms.
  • Guided three Ph.D scholars  and 5  M.V.SC students for doctoral and post graduate thesis .
