Salient achievements:

Prof. P. Gunasekaran has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in Microbiology and Microbial Genomics He has owes the credit of having started a new course on M.Sc Genomics for the first time in India. Prof. P. Gunasekaran has completed more than 25 national and international research projects and has several ongoing research projects, which are basic and applied in nature. His research is mainly focused on the improvement of ethanol production using the ethanologenic bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis. He has published more than 40 research articles on genetics and molecular biology of Z. mobilis. In addition to the research on Z. mobilis, he has been working on the process optimization and production of various industrial enzymes from different bacterial and fungal sources. Recently, he has identified a number of novel antimicrobial peptides and industrial enzymes from various environmental samples through metagenomics approaches. Currently, he is working on metagenomics for the discovery of novel enzymes and synthetic biology for biofuel production.

To his credit, he has published 143 research papers in internationally reputed and refereed journals and he has presented more than 200 invited lectures at various international and national conferences. He received several national and international awards and fellowships. Presently, he is serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.
